Those born and/or raised in a cult - 2nd Generation (2G)
The cultic studies literature increasingly refers to those becoming part of cults as adults as "first generation" (1G) and those spending all or part of their childhood in a cult as "second generation" (2G) (Kendall, 2006).
2G cult leavers have, to a large degree, had to speak out about their own experiences because their very particular difficulties have not been recognised by society.
Gillie is therapist to a number of 2G individuals. She understands that many of their issues are different from those who were recruited into cults as adults (1G) and uses her knowledge of cults, understanding of attachment theory, developmental theory and trauma theory to inform the therapy whilst listening and learning from the individual.
Gillie understands that practical issues may need to be addressed with 2G who may be deeply disorientated by leaving their group, or may not have had the help they need and deserve on leaving the group, and so are struggling with adapting to society and its very different culture.
Gillie understands about 'Third Culture Kids' (TCKs) and their issues. (She was born in Uganda, East Africa and so is also a TCK.) Dr. Lois Kendall (2006) has pointed out that 2G are TCK's.
